Ok, so some members around here are gone. They, much to the dismay of others, took their tutorials with them. It's been a hot topic lately. Frankly I miss the info just like everyone else, but I am sick of the complaining about it. It's time that the rest of us step up and replace that info. I propose this thread as a place for people seeking a tutorial on a certain topic. Put down what you wanna know. Then I would hope someone with knowledge on the topic will step up and put a tutorial up in the tutorial forum. I'm not the most experienced but if I see somethin I know how to do I'm gonna make a tutorial on it!!! Who is with me?? Let's pool out resources and replace the info is lost. Those who are gone aren't the only ones who know how to build guitars! |

Sounds good to me. I actually use some of the "disappeared" methods/tips fairly regularly. Just used one the other day - using Self Adhesive Pickup Copper Foil Shielding Tape on router bit bearings to adjust for in between sizes of purfling and binding. A few I think I have saved somewhere, e.g. suggested bracing sizes and top thicknesses for OM/SJ. |

One has to admire the spirit of folks when they set out to help themselves and others. Back in my day with the OLF when the OLF was new and growing many of us learned a great deal here from helping each other and the generous contributions of those in the know. Some of us used our newly gained knowledge to build guitars and some of us also used what we have learned, again with the help of at times many others who were once here too, to capture this information and create tutorials for anyone and everyone to hopefully benefit from. The following are tutorials that incorporate the ideas of many folks at times and the procedures and methods represent vetted information that has been scrutinized by many countless times. It's also stuff that works.... and has worked very well for me many, many times. Something that is very important to me, personally.... is to always provide attribution to those who helped me and others out. You will see this attribution in my own writing in the tutorials. It's also the proper thing to do, always. What you can expect to find at the link that I will post are tutorials that address the following: Fitting Bridges Installing Back Joint Reinforcements Baking Tops Installing Side Tapes Binding a Guitar Bridge Removal Dent Repair Fretting - Arbor Press Gap Filling Go-Bar Deflection Half Pencil Trick Hot Hide Glue Joining Plates - Tape Method Making a Protective Shield Epoxy Pore Filling X-Braces Flattening The Upper Bout Truing Sides Prior To Binding Making a Bone Nut Making a Rosette Installing a Rosette Checking Neck Angle Neck Fitting Side Bending Some of these methods I do differently these days but everything at the link does provide a method that will work. By the way all of these tutorials were always here at the OLF.... in the tutorial forum. Thanks for posting a list of your tutorials, Hesh. I've studied several of them in the past, and look forward to checking out many more in the future. I am like many others here that are saddened by the loss of so much information by the removal of so many tutorials, but the OLF hasn't exactly been plunged into the Dark Ages. There is still a massive amount of info to be had, and so many builders to help fill in the gaps. Lets remember to behave like our parents taught us - ask nicely, say thank you, and help whenever you can. Alex |

I also want to thank Hesh, Chris Paulick, Stephen Boone, and the many others who have posted tutorials. I have learned a lot, and often review them before performing important operations. A new tutorial that would help me: Repairing French Polish. If there was a video with it that would be especially helpful. |

Hesh's toots are great. Thanks Hesh! Did Todd take his toots with him? I thought about doing a tutorial on how I do sound hole binding. If that would interest anybody. I would like to see tutorials on inlay basics and engraving, side ports, cutaways, and arm rest bevels. I haven't looked to see if any of these exist though! |

I use the tutorials all the time and look forward to the day when I have mastered a sequence or perfected a particular method to the point that I can add to the knowledge base. The recent deletion of certain members' contributions is entirely their own doing and not what Lance wanted. Disappointing on many levels, but so far the sky remains overhead. |

I have a folder of categorized tutes and ideas that I have printed out over the years from several builders that have been members ,are members and some who have gone.There has been a huge amount of generous and useful sharing . |

Oh pleeze ... granted, it's Lance's forum, and nobody is disputing that he is entitled to do as he wants ... but the facts are that all traces of Todd , and also all traces of the Padma, vanished on the same day at the same time ...you don't seriously believe that both these guys went through their 1000's of posts deleting them assiduously, one at a time ? |

Hi Zeke: I remember a tutorial on the OLF years ago that I believe Paul Woolson did about binding sound holes. I just searched the archives and could not find it but I'll bet it's there and someone with a better handle of primary and secondary search keys could find it. I also found this on the web and it looks very well done to me: http://liutaiomottola.com/construction/BindingSoundhole.htm Also on the OLF likely in the last couple of years there was a thread about sound hole binding too and Link Van Cleave even made a very cool jig for prebending the bindings to that tight radius, I know because he generously made one for me and sent it to me. A search under Link's user name and perhaps a search key such as "binding" or "sound hole" might get you where you want to go too. Hope this helps! |

Why does it matter so much to know what may or may not have transpired between a member or members and Lance? Bottom line is, this is Lance's forum and he has the stressful and thankless task of trying to keep things on a respectful level and moving in a positive direction. I think he is doing the best he possibly can and I am thankful for it. As Zeke has proposed, it is in our best interest to move forward, be helpful, share what we can and contribute whatever we feel might be beneficial to even the most experienced builder entering this great community. |

Zeke, there's still 6 pages of tutorial stuff here. Lots of good info. I think most of the stuff that's gone from here (is it just Todd's?) is out there on the WWW somewhere. I'm very appreciative of all those that generously donate their time to providing tuts. They have helped me loads over the years, especially on my first few instruments. One day maybe I might be able to give a little back. In the meantime, if there is something you find you might need a little help with, there's a lot of great people here that are very happy to give in depth help. Change isn't always bad. For whatever reason, I'm happy to see some old faces back here that I haven't seen in a while. Enjoy the Day, Danny |
